Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Work as part of a larger project team on various aspects of software engineering
  • Under the direction of project managers, provide support to the larger team goals of developing software to enable the use of scientific information generated in Research and Development
  • Work with design experts and users to consider the user experience
  • Write supporting documentation as necessary for long-term maintenance purposes

Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration):

  • Pursuing Bachelor of Science or Master’s degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering
    • Will also consider engineering majors with accompanying strong software skills
  • To qualify for internship, students must be enrolled for school in Fall of 2021. Bachelor's students should be going into senior year (or 2nd year for graduate students).

  • Foundational knowledge of software algorithms, data structures and design principles with a proven ability to design and build code

  • Gather existing data and/or generate physics-based information to solve technical problems in a material’s focused research facility
  • Apply appropriate data analysis tools including, but not limited to, statistical methods, neural networks, genetic algorithm and gaussian processes

Research Intern —Mobile Communications and Networking

The Mobile Communications & Networking department has multiple intern positions available for graduate students during summer 2021. We have an active research program with focus on wireless communications, sensing and networking. During this summer, we aim to continue our current activity as well as create seeds for new directions.

We are looking for summer interns in the following areas:

a) Localization and Tracking: Design and build innovative wireless tracking solutions that can operate in resource-constrained (infrastructure cost, energy, etc.) environments; scope ranges from ultra low power wireless tracking tags to intelligent sensor fusion (visual, RF, acoustic, etc.) approaches for collaborative, immersive applications.

b) Applications over mmWave networks: Context-aware, real-time 3D reconstruction using autonomous agents (AGVs, self-driving vehicles, etc.) operating over local 5G mmWave networks for enabling digital twin applications in industrial environments.

c) mmWave Networks: Designing and implementing new beam-selection algorithms and codebook designs in mmWave base-stations on a test-bed deployed within NECLA campus and evaluating their performance. Explore the use of directional mmWave transmissions for positioning applications.

 

d) Wireless Sensing: Design and implement new wireless sensing hardware architecture and algorithms that can track and identify human activity in an indoor environment. Scope for sensor technology includes UWB and mmWave radars, and includes solutions for collaborative/cooperative sensing solutions using multiple devices. Explore the use of AI/ML techniques in improving sensor and activity detection accuracy.

 

We are seeking candidates with experience in building embedded wireless systems, low-power RF design, applied machine learning for wireless sensing, AR/VR systems, beamforming and code-book design, and in general extensive hands-on systems building experience, as appropriate for the areas outlined above.

The System Security team has multiple spring/summer internship openings in the areas of security with the focuses on advanced persistent threats (APT), Internet of Things (IoT) security, critical infrastructure security (e.g., ICS, SCADA systems), web application security, and automotive system security.
