The Machine Learning Department invites applications for summer and fall 2022 internships.  We have research projects covering many areas of machine learning. The internship will involve research and development of novel machine learning algorithms with applications in image/video analysis, natural language processing, big data analytics, bioinformatics, and health care. Our internships normally result in high-quality publications. Minimum duration of the internships are usually 3 months and the exact dates are flexible.

The Machine Learning group conducts research on various aspects of machine intelligence and reasoning, from the exploration of new algorithms to applications in computer vision, semantic comprehension, and bioinformatics. Our researchers have extensive expertise in theoretical and application aspects of machine learning, as well as in the development of parallel algorithms for large-scale data analysis.

Ongoing projects focus on machine reasoning, text understanding, deep generative models, representation learning, few-shot/zero-shot learning, interpretable models, data visualization, deep learning systems, and reasoning with combinatorial optimization, among others. Publishing is an integral part of our activities as a means for calibrating the quality of the research and to ensure staying at the forefront of technology. Application projects emphasize technologies that solve real world problems, and many of our research results have been and will be transferred into industry products.

To succeed in this role, you should have the following skills and experience

Education: enrolled in BSc, or MSc/PhD graduate student in the fields of Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Physics or Computer Science.

Background: 

  • Familiar with video processing, robot vision, audio processing, or image processing.
  • Familiar with continuous biomedical signals: heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature and some signal processing techniques
  • Familiar with sensors for biomedical signal acquisition (experience with multi-sensor fusion is preferred)
  • Familiar with statistical analysis techniques
  • Familiar with hands-on work in experimental settings
  • Good problem-solving skills and creativity

Programming Languages: Proficient in different programming languages such as Python/C/C++/C#.

Position Scope Details:

This internship is with the Software Engineering team in the Scientific Computing group, which exists to enhance the modeling capabilities of Corning Incorporated. Our team works with a variety of development frameworks and state of the art hardware to deliver solutions that enhance Corning’s ability to innovate. Our software engineers are responsible for the full systems development life cycle for projects that use a variety of back end, front end, and database technologies.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:
Work with a senior Software Engineer(s) and our Modeling community to improve Corning’s modeling processes. This can include developing models, helping modelers to use our HPC clusters efficiently, or deploying models in a way that makes them accessible by Corning engineers worldwide (e.g. in Kubernetes). This work may be done on an individual basis with guidance, or as part of an agile team.

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

  • Normal Business Hours 8:00-5:00.
  • Duration: Summer 2021, 8-12 weeks.

 

Required Education: 

  • Pursuing Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or similar degree requiring significant programming and project development.

 

Required Skills:
