Research Intern – System Security

The System Security team has multiple spring/summer internship openings in the areas of security with the focuses on advanced persistent threats (APT), Internet of Things (IoT) security, critical infrastructure security (e.g., ICS, SCADA systems), web application security, and automotive system security. We are solving real world problems and building research prototypes to defend against cyber-attacks in hot research areas. If you have interest or have been working on these areas, please apply for our internships! The internship typically produces high quality publications, patents, and the implementation of a research prototype. Our previous intern works have been incorporated into NEC product prototypes and resulted in publications in top conferences such as USENIX Security, ACM CCS, NDSS, ACM SIGMETRICS, CIKM and VLDB etc.

 

Candidates should be pursuing a PhD or be engaged in active research and have strong system design and building skills. We have multiple intern positions that cover a diverse set of research directions. Previous hands-on experience on any of the following topics is a plus:

• Familiar with threat hunting and attack forensics, especially on system provenance graphs
• Familiar with threat intelligence and its applications
• Familiar with vulnerability analysis, log analysis, and network traffic analysis in the security context
• Experiences with real-world penetration testing and tools, such as Metasploit
• Security knowledge in areas of 5G, IoT, automotive, web security, critical infrastructure
• Natural language processing techniques in security applications
• Machine learning and AI (especially deep neural networks)
• Strong system building skills

We are seeking self-motivated graduate students in the area of artificial intelligence, machine learning and data mining. Candidates are expected to conduct research with massive data from physical and IT systems and build applications to solve real and complex problems. He/she must be enrolled in a PhD program in CS/CE with strong publication records on the following topics:

Research Intern – Optical Networking and Sensing

The Optical Networking and Sensing department invites applications for summer 2021 internships. We are seeking individuals with background in machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, and/or statistical signal processing to work on developing innovate algorithms and solutions for intelligent sensing problems. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to research and develop innovative tools to extract useful information from large-scale data generated by our own distributed optical fiber sensing system and make a practical impact on our future products and solutions for safety & security, smart city, infrastructure health monitoring, etc.

Ongoing projects include anomaly detection, object detection, localization and tracking, video/audio data fusion, signal enhancement, domain adaptation, data augmentation, predictive modeling, and source localization.

Requirements:

• Currently enrolled in PhD/MSc program in electrical engineering, computer science, statistics, applied mathematics, or equivalent
• Expertise in one of more of the following areas: deep learning, computer vision, acoustics, array signal processing, real-time processing, time-series analysis, and/or statistical modeling
• Excellent programming skills in Python or MATLAB, experience with deep learning frameworks (Pytorch, Tensorflow) is a plus
• Publication record in top conferences (NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, CVPR, ICCV, IJCAI, AAAI, and ICASSP) is a plus
• Good presentation and collaboration skills
