Google will host a  “PhD Research & Engineering Insights” event at CSAIL on November 6^th from 12-2pm in the Star Seminar Room (32-D436). The session will also include application + interview tips and food will be served!

We’re excited to welcome back two recent MIT graduates who are now at Google to speak with us about their experiences transitioning from the lab to the workplace, CSAIL grad Suvinay Subramanian and RLE grad Anny Zheng.

• Day-to-day experiences: Hear firsthand accounts of what it's like to work on research and engineering projects at Google.
• Cutting-edge research: Discover how Google fosters innovation and pushes the boundaries of technology.
• Application and interview process: Get valuable tips and insights into successfully navigating the Google hiring process.

This session will feature a presentation followed by a Q&A.

Speaker Bios:

• Suvinay Subramanian is a Software Engineer at Google, where he works on the architecture and codesign for Google's ML supercomputers, Tensor Processing Units (TPUs). His work has directly impacted innovative architecture and systems features in multiple generations of TPUs, and empowered performant training and serving of Google's research and production AI workloads. He also co-hosts the Computer Architecture Podcast that spotlights cutting-edge developments in computer architecture and systems. Suvinay received his PhD here at CSAIL under Professor Daniel Sanchez.  

• Anny Zheng is a Senior Software Engineer of AI & Infrastructure at Google. She is directly engaged in the definition and design of Google's next generation data center network architecture for ML. She also serves as the Chair of Optica Optical Communications Technical Group and IEEE Communication Society Standards Liaison of Optical Networking Technical Committee. Anny received her PhD here at MIT under RLE Professor Vincent Chan

Topic: The Ups and Downs of Entrepreneurship

Abstract

Entrepreneurship looks exciting from the outside. The reality is harder and richer. In this fireside chat, Sami shares what he learned by selling a startup to Google, then spending a decade there building products like Google News, and now starting again as co-founder and CTO at Maven AGI, an AI native company reinventing customer experience. We will talk about the early spark, the long grind, learning distribution, and how to shift your mindset about technology. Spoiler alert- it's not about the tech, it's solving customer problems. Attendees will leave with practical habits, stories from the trenches, and a clear sense of how to keep going when the path is not straight.

Brief bio

Sami brings 25+ years building personalization and AI powered software at Google, IBM, and startups. He co-founded Zingku, which was acquired by Google, then led engineering for Google News and Google Play Newsstand for a decade. He holds more than 50 patents and has scaled products from inception to over 1 billion users. Sami holds SB and MEng degrees from MIT. He is co-founder and CTO at Maven AGI. He lives in Boston with his family and enjoys boating.
