Corning’s summer internship experience is rich with hands-on learning. You’ll live, work, and experience the communities in which Corning operates, while building on-the-job skills. As our Intern, you will be responsible for analyzing data to solve problems and/or quantify behaviors in the field of materials science. This position requires good communication and interpersonal skills for collaboration with remote team members.

 

The purpose of our Intern Program is to raise the bar on talent by strengthening our pipeline for entry level roles for immediate and future needs.

 

To be considered for an internship at Corning Incorporated, you must be actively enrolled at a college or university as a full-time student seeking a bachelor’s degree or higher. You must also have a current cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher (on a 0.00 to 4.00 scale).

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Gather existing data and/or generate physics-based information to solve technical problems in a material’s focused research facility
  • Apply appropriate data analysis tools including, but not limited to, statistical methods, neural networks, genetic algorithm and gaussian processes
  • Work under the mentorship of senior researchers to solve technical problems using the aforementioned approaches
  • As necessary, present findings to larger project teams to aid in fundamental understanding

 

Travel requirements (please note if international): Anticipated travel time <10% (domestic).

 

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

  • M-F; 40 hours per week
  • Some flexibility required
  • Duration: Summer 2021, 8-12 weeks

 

Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration):

  • Pursuing degree in Data Analytics or Mathematics with a preference for students who have some formal classes in a scientific discipline such as physics, materials or engineering
  • Enrolled or completed formal classes in data analytics, statistics or mathematics
  • To qualify for internship, students must be enrolled for school in Fall of 2021.

 

Required Skills:

  • Experience in data driven and predictive modeling
  • Analytical experience using any mix of software/programming languages including, but not limited to MATLAB/Octave, Mathematica, C++, Fortran, R, Python, VB.net, Julia
  • Advanced familiarity with applications of Python packages including, but not limited to TensorFlow, Keras, PyTorch for Regression, Classification and Reinforcement Learning
  • Ability to collaborate closely with scientific community, business leaders and management
  • Good written and verbal communication skills

 

Desired Skills:

  • Interest in real world applications of analytical methods to solve problems in a science and technology environment
  • Experience with any Graphical User Interface development is a plus

 

Soft Skills (Communication/Team/Leadership):

  • Must be self-motivated to deliver meaningful results as required by project
  • Collaborative and able to openly engage with colleagues from diverse cultures, disciplines and backgrounds to achieve project goals
  • The ability to communicate effectively by phone and video with team members in multiple locations
