Building on the success of FinTech@CSAIL, CSAIL Alliances is excited to share the latest iteration of the research initiative: FinTechAI@CSAIL. Based on member interest in narrowing scope to the groundbreaking and disruptive impact of AI in finance, this new direction will explore the opportunities and challenges of emerging technology in this space.
FinTechAI@CSAIL connects member companies with leading AI researchers at MIT to learn the capabilities and risks of AI advancements. This initiative will be led by MIT Professor Andrew W. Lo, Director of the MIT Laboratory for Financial Engineering and CSAIL PI. Additionally, FinTechAI@CSAIL will explore how technical developments might impact the global economy through industry applications and considers how policy can be shaped to address these new capabilities. In pursuit of this work, FinTechAI@CSAIL will foster collaborations with other relevant groups at MIT including the Laboratory for Financial Engineering, The Initiative on the Digital Economy, and more.
Through FinTechAI@CSAIL, CSAIL Alliances will bring together researchers, industry leaders, policy makers, regulators, and academics to study new AI technologies, opportunities, technical challenges, and applications within finance. Those involved with FinTechAI@CSAIL will collaborate on workshops, best practices, and create white papers to share knowledge and drive real world impact.
Discover groundbreaking AI technologies, collaborate with top researchers, lead the future of financial operations innovation, and stay ahead in the rapidly evolving financial landscape by joining FinTechAI@CSAIL.

Andrew W. Lo is the Charles E. and Susan T. Harris Professor at the MIT Sloan School of Management, director of the MIT Laboratory for Financial Engineering, and a principal investigator at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL). Professor Lo’s current research spans five areas: evolutionary models of investor behavior and adaptive markets, systemic risk and financial regulation, quantitative models of financial markets, financial applications of machine-learning techniques and secure multi-party computation, and healthcare finance. Professor Lo also has a number of industry affiliations, sits on several corporate and non-profit boards, and advises various biotech startups.
As the faculty lead of FinTechAI@CSAIL, Professor Lo aims to develop practical solutions to common industry challenges and provide investors, financial institutions, and regulators with tools for better decision making. His research explores both the positive and negative aspects of financial technology as well as the nature of intelligence—both human and artificial—to better understand markets and financial systems. He hopes to use the power of incredible new technologies like AI to tackle some of the biggest financial and economic challenges of our time.
